Crop Amount Worksheet

Growing storage crops is key to enjoying produce from your garden in a steady, consistent supply throughout the growing season and into the winter. When you’re developing a planting plan, give some thought to how and where your crops will be stored and make selections based on your storage capacities and preferences. Some crop varieties have much better storage lives than others. If you’re planning to store a crop for a long period, make sure you choose an appropriate variety for this application. For example, the yellow onion variety ‘Copra’ will hold much longer than the sweet white onion variety ‘Ailsa Craig’. A good seed catalog or some online research will let you know if a particular variety is well suited for storage.

This worksheet, from our book Grow More Food, will help you determine how much of each crop to grow to suit your needs:

Planting Dates Worksheet

Ideal earliest and latest planting dates can vary widely depending on your latitude, local microclimate, and days to maturity of the variety you’re growing. These dates assume you’re not using season-extension infrastructure (if you’re using a high tunnel or row covers, earlier first plantings and later last plantings are possible). The dates here are general guidelines; check with other growers in your area.
